Former St John Ambulance Cadet Celebrates Medical School Success with Future Doctors Award

Leon Bavar received the award in recognition of his academic commitment and volunteering with St John Ambulance. The award supports aspiring medical students from underrepresented backgrounds who may face financial or other barriers when applying to study medicine.

The Future Doctors Award can help with costs associated with the medical school application process, including additional tuition, travel and interview preparation.

Adam Sturdy, a St John Ambulance volunteer and trustee of Anya’s Charity, presented Leon with the award in person at Notting Hill Carnival.

Speaking about his achievement, Leon said,

“Getting into Medicine is still so surreal! I am incredibly grateful for the consistent support that Anya's Charity provided to me throughout the application process, alongside my incredible St John Ambulance family.”

Adam Sturdy, representing Anya’s Charity, said,

“It was a pleasure to present Leon with a Future Doctors Award, and we wish him every success on his journey into medicine. His commitment to his studies at school and duties as a St John Ambulance cadet showed us exactly why he is a future medic worth supporting.”

The Future Doctors Award supports students who demonstrate financial need, academic potential, and motivation to succeed, with a focus on young people from underrepresented communities.

Alongside his studies, Leon has continued volunteering with St John Ambulance, gaining further experience as an Emergency Responder with the charity’s Hammersmith Unit, supporting events across London.

He will now begin the next stage of his journey as he takes up his place at medical school.
